when i was little luke and i shared a room and i would never want to go to bed, thus keeping the baby up. so my dad would take me onto the back porch and tell me to scream at the river (witch was a long ways away, but he said if i was going to scream i might as well keep the ship captains awake, always scream towards the river)
but yeah, 21 and i could really use a scream at the river right now
my prof is telling me about some new products that you can draw/animate with you fingers because the web cam picks up the movements and translates to the program. i dont really like it. it reminds me of this one theory that my experimental prof was talking about; saying that the only digital artiest are the programers, that everyone elce using the program are just proving that the program works. an whall that theory is mostly bull, as the people who use photoshop and maya are creating art, this experimental particle animation that the examples are doing are proving the theory right. i guess thats what makes my experimental class so interesting, learning the difference between art and people messing around with programs and calling it art without proper training or knowledge of how things works

Ok so once I was at a party/drunken hang out at a friends. We where chilling in my friends room and I was watching them play videogames. Now his room is always hot, and with so many people in the room and the games running it was even hotter, so I tuck off my shirt. It was be (a tiny white girl) in a room with three other guys (who where much bigger then me) and a girlfriend of a friend of a friend’s girlfriend. Now I have to say, for the giant dumb drunk assholes my guys are, they are generly sweet genuine people who always look out for me, and are pretty used to me and my oddities, such as strange dress and being able to warp into a pretzel without notesing it. Me pulling off my shirt when I have a sports bra on in an hot room tipsy is normal and mostly ignored.
The girlfriend on the other hand quacks at me and tell me to put my shirt back on
“Why” I ask, as I have nothing to hide. Im a skinny girl with not much boobs, nothings poping out and at least one of these guys have seen me in my bathing suit. I trust them to take care of me completely intoxicated, tipsy and shirtless is nothing to worry about.
“because its like you don’t respect yourself” she tells me
‘Whoa whoa” one of my guys start as they begin to defend me. And though I don’t rember most of the rest of the conversation, ive always wondered what she though I was trying to do. Was I trying to flirt with these guys by pulling my shirt off, I don’t know how I wasn’t respecting myself. I know she was in a new environment and people where playing kings downstairs, but who is she to know how to respect oneself.
Im still baffled by this over a year later

so heres a thing
ive seen people comment of this movie, “yeah ill give up my voice to get my dream guy”
but let me put it this way, would you give up your art, your music, your favorite talent to maybe get your dream partner
giving up this important piece of yourself for a slip possibility hanging on a witches spell
personality, i dont think i could do that
ok, i would like to direct you to THIS video made for ‘Coraline’, Laika’s first signature stop motion.
i can never ever express my love for what they did with the hair in Paranorman. hey had MOVING HAIR in a MAIN CHARACTER (the sister Courtney with the long ponytail). that extra bit of challenge and detail is amazing! for this one moment alone they had to have one of the hair and fibers people in there with there glues and tools to move it, OR they had to change out THE DOLL for each frame. and yet its such a natural movement and adds so much to Normans character.
the creators of Paranorman said they did a lot of things in this movie to challenge themselves and push the boundaries of stop motion, but what people don’t realise is that its the little details like this that makes up that challenge. i could go on for hours about just the hair in the movie, how theres color variations in the fiber and it STAYS THE SAME in each doll. how Courtney ponytail moves naturally and fluidly through the whole movie no matter what. how the uncles BEARD is consistent with every mouth movement of the replacement animatio. how they go Neil’s hair to curl like at and be consistent from doll to doll! this movie is truly an amazing work of art and a labor of love

ok this is a thing that bothers me and ill tell you why
there is no such thing as ‘reverse’ x y z, because it goes both ways. racism goes both ways, black people and other minorities can be racist just as easily as whit fokes, it happened all the time in my high school. i have been accused of making accusations of a person ‘because there black’ numerous times. yes you are black, but just because i saw you take something from my desk does not mean you can get away with it by accusing me of racism or the like
this goes for sexism too
though i know where this op is coming from, i found this image in the ‘male-privilege’ tag. yes people use the reversesexisem/racism as an excuse all the time, but it does not exist. because there is just racism, and there is just sexism, but it does not give you the excuse to use this as an excuse to get out of what ever you did wrong
idk where im going with this, help im becoming a social justice blog
I kind of have beef with the up coming movie ‘Rise of the Guardians’
I was initially drawn in by the character design. I was vary intrigued by it, the hummingbird aspect of the tooth fairy the dream like aspect of the sand man. They are beautiful designs, and from what I can see so far, the animation is as well. But my problem isn’t with the art and design of the film, it’s the plot
From what I can tell of the film, some dark antagonist comes in and threatens the holidays (namely Christmas) and the kids of the world. A simple concept that has been done over and over and over again by almost every children’s Christmas movie to date. Christmas is threatened and they must save it to bring toys and joy to the boy and girls of the world. A tired and over used concept that no amount of quality 3d animation could bring me to the theater.
On top of this is the fact that they are only using American holidays and myths. I know im beginning to sound social justice, but the addition of the Easter Bunny bothers me. He is primarily only an American holiday, and I don’t see how this movie is going to translate to other countries because of it. I would have rather seen a different myth or not have him in all together.
Now ‘Rise of the Guardians’ has already won an award in a showing that was only 60% lit and rendered, and by all means congratulations to the cast and crew of it that’s an amazing accomplishment, but I don’t think is should be ranking up with movies such as ‘Brave’ and “Paranorman’. Thows movies where pushing the boundaries of there medium, paving ways in animation and stop motion. Beautiful animation that is still in the box complementing weak plot shouldn’t be ranked with them
So that’s my rant take it or leave it
I guess I can understand why you would think that, but from this, i sense that maybe you havent really looked into what the movie is about.
It’s based on a series of children’s books, and it’s not about saving Christmas. It’s about these 4 legends coming together and recruting a 5th member to help protect the children of the world from being trapped in fear by the antagonist.
and just to clear up any misunderstandings, these are NOT all american myths.
Santa Claus atually started out as an ancient Greek myth, and there are similar stories of his all around the world, in many countries.
Jack Frost is a scandinavian legend, first told by vikings. When the vikings travelled across to other lands, they brought their legends and folkore with them.
Sandman DOES come from western folkore, but when and where his origins truly came from is unknown. who knows.
The easter bunny was first written about by Georg Franck von Franckenau, from Germany way back in 1618.
The toothfairy did not become so until the early 1900’s. Originaly, there was a myth of a Tooth Mouse in France, who collected the children’s teeth. But the tradition of collecting teeth is an ancient one and was often considered a right of passage in ancient civilizations.
The bogeyman’s legend originates from Scotland.
It’s exactly how it was said in the movie trailer.
“WE GO BY MANY NAMES, AND TAKE MANY FORMS.”
This whole story is about believing, and not letting go of the child within you.
We’re all forced to grow up one way or another, but that doesn’t mean our life can’t still have a bit of magic and myth in it. :)
you are right i haven’t looked much into this past the previews of the movie ive seen, but as i said in the ask i got they are all highly christian first world countries. yes this is a large part of the population, but withs such a large company such as DreamWorks they are cutting out all of africa middle east and asia from there audience.
i will admit that i should have looked more into it before i did my little rant, but i think some of my point are still true. where is this movie to stand with movies such as ‘Paranorman’ and ‘Brave’. this looks like it is a ‘safe’ movie, not pushing any boundaries in animation or messadge. a purely ‘defeat evil and save the worl’ kind of plot on top of clasic 3d animation.
lets look at paranorman. from a non film major back ground like mine you look at the movie and just see flowing animation, but if you look into it more the replacement animation they used to the EXTENT they used is not only mind-blowing but paving the way for more stop motion movies in the future. that almost simple car jump scene for example probably tuck hours upon hours of just rigging the car and other parts in mid air for just a what, 30 second shot. thats intense! this is on top of a simple ‘kid saves town’ plot with vary dark undertones that are vary true to history. they have an 12 year old girl hanged in that movie in a way that there is not room for an uproar, in a way kids could understand it without nightmares.
then there is ‘Brave’. did you know that pixar invented two new programs just to animate her hair? and not only was that animation past perfection it was with a strong female character who didn’t need a man, witch is a new concept for Disney and even more a disney princess!
im gonna do more looking into ‘Rise of the Guardians’ now though that i have been getting more feed back, but i am still holding to the fact that i dont think it is on the same level in plot and animation as these other movies
im american and i am gonna say that i am not as knowledgeable in what most of the other countries have as myths and legends past some of the agent ones. i can understand that most european countries might share these holidays with america, but a lot of the middle east and asia (to my knowledge) dont. i guess im more put off that they are only focussing on these holidays because they are the most know christian holidays of first world countries, witch cuts off a huge population of the world. im not saying that this movie is not going to be wonderful in its own right, but that its target audience probably will not keep track of this movie past the theater, more of a box office success and nothing more. then again im just drawing my conclusions from the previews i have seen i have not seen the movie yet
